Federal Tax Credits

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 that allowed consumers to receive a federal tax credit for energy efficient improvements made on their home in in 2006, 2007, and 2009. Energy efficient improvements made on homes in 2008 are not included.

The guidance from the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and the accompanying Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Guidance Notices. It is not intended as legal advice, and you should consult a tax professional with specific questions.

  • Installation costs are not included.
  • For tax purposes, save your receipt and either the ENERGY STAR label from all your new windows OR the Manufacturer's Certification Statement.
  • Use IRS Form 5695
  • Must be “placed into service” between Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2009.
  • Tax credit - 10% of cost, up to $2002 for all windows, skylights and storm windows
